When Nice, Smart Dogs Get Downright Vicious

From the Book, "Hidden Secrets Behind Dog Training."
Written by Master Trainer and Dog Psychologist - Kevin "The Dog Prodigy"

Here’s where your dog’s dark side will come to light. Canine experts refer to these dogs as “Ticking Time Bombs,” “Loaded Guns” or “Red Zone Dogs.” Any way you choose to label them, they are in need of serious professional help. Sorry. But these dogs are NOT going to change or get trained by working some dog trainer. In fact, most would refuse your case, tell you there is no hope, or even worse, would advise you to get rid of your dog.

If you took such a dog to a typical “obedience” class, he'd thank you for bringing him to a buffet. As he is licking his mouth and rubbing his paws, his thoughts would be, "Wow. Thanks, Mom! All-I-can-eat people with their doggies for 6-8 eight weeks straight. Who can beat that! Those small dogs are my favorite. They make great appetizers and hopefully I'll run into one of those wiener dogs so I can floss my front canines with one."

10 Red Flags that You Should Definitely Worry About:

Red Flag #1:

You have a dog that shows serious aggression toward other dogs or people and nothing you say or do seems to get his attention. Sometimes your dog goes as far as biting and correcting you in the process. These are the dogs that once they find themselves in that zone, they totally block everything and don’t even recognize or care for nobody's safety.

Red Flag #2:

Every time you get close to your dog while he is eating or chewing on something, he tenses up, pauses and growls. Look for a curled lip, a stomp or a crouching position. In a sudden move, he may lunge and block his dish with his head so you keep your distance. Maybe you notice him growling the entire time while gobbling down every last kibble of his food.

Unless you want to lose a finger, don’t try anything cute or sneaky on your own. All this indicates that your dog doesn’t fully trust or respect you. This is definitely worth repeating again. Your dog needs to trust and respect you!

Some of these dogs hide or run away after they steal something and when you try to take it away, they snap at your hand. Again, a dog that fully sees you as its leader would never behave this way and would certainly leave your funky underwear alone!

Red Flag #3:

Whether your dog happens to be excited, agitated or just kicking back, and you try to restrain or grab him by its collar, he really tries to bite you. How about when you are about to move him off your bed, off the couch or just off your lap? Something as minor as bumping into your dog can set him off to the point of biting you very badly. Maybe your dog was sound asleep and you intentionally or accidentally, woke him up and that’s where he went for the kill. “How dare you disturb me? You moron! Can't you see that I was sleeping like a baby? Hello?” is what basically each attack translates to.

This usually happens to those of you who let your spoiled dogs lounge on the bed and on the couch with you day and night. So in a way, your dog gradually takes over and sees himself as your equal. See what happens when you’re too nice?

Red Flag #4:

As an act of defiant, your doggie grabs the leash or your clothes with his teeth and won’t let go. How about taking it one step further by tugging backward in an attempt to get the leash out of your grip or get on his hind legs to really bite you? You may notice him growling nonstop to intimidate you even more. Folks, this is not a tug of war game and your dog knows it very well! In a way he's telling you, “NO! You let go of the leash!” Or, “Let me jerk YOU around for a change so you see how it feels!”

Red Flag #5:

When your dog can't get his way, he bites at the air trying to scare you. You might hear the sound of those lovely teeth snap shut. The only reason a dog would snap at their owner like this is to scare, challenge, and to dominate anybody who dares to stand up to them. Don’t forget that dogs are much faster than you think and rarely miss. After all, they catch a fly in midair. So ninety percent of the time, that snap is just a warning for you to back off, or the next time those canines will dig in and do some serious damage.

Red Flag #6:

When he can’t win his way with you or when being demanding, do you catch him pressing down on your hand or your sleeve with his teeth and hanging on for a few seconds? He may even growl, but not necessarily break the skin. This is NOT a love bite! It is serious and it makes you feel nervous.

Even if you don’t necessarily feel much pain or get any puncture wounds, your dog's telling you, “Look, I could’ve crushed your bones and take a good chunk out of you. But I’ll let you go for now. Not yet. GRRRRR.”

Red Flag #7:

Your dog tends to bark, growl, snap or pace back and forth, especially when you get loud with a loved one. Sometimes he will jump up on you or the person you are arguing with, while nudging at your hands and feet. It could be your boyfriend, girlfriend, partner or even a roommate. Basically, the dog is trying to get things under control on his own.

Often these dogs don't even let you hug or show each other any affection. They push their way through and jump, nip, growl and bark, trying to get you to keep your distance from one another. Again, this isn’t cute or funny and rather a serious sign of lack of trust and leadership on your part. So the dog is trying to wear the pants in the house and wants everyone else in their swimming suits.

Red Flag #8:

Your dog graduated from those wimpy bites to serious bites that actually breaks the skin and leaves you with good puncture wounds. These incidents are usually premeditated. It’s not like another day when you can get away with an excuse for your dog by saying, “Well, it wasn’t his fault for crying out loud because blah, blah, blah…”

This kind of behavior could be triggered when you are reprimanding your dog for unacceptable behavior such as: attacking another dog, a person or even a child. It could be because you tried to stop him from stealing food off counters or taking an object away from him.

Red Flag #9:

If you have more than one dog, you most likely know which one is the alpha. One way to tell is to look for a strong personality. This dog usually bullies the other dogs, demands all of the toys, all the bones, and all of Mommy and Daddy’s attention. He pushes the other dogs out of the way whenever he feels like it. And when he gets really frustrated, he takes it a step further by causing serious harm to the weaker or more vulnerable dog.

Ironically, this type of behavior always intensifies around the owner. In fact, most of the time these dogs get along just fine, but the minute that favorite “member of the family” shows up, all hell breaks loose!

You guessed it. That individual is the weakest link here. Think about it, if the owner was truly in charge, just one word, and all the dogs would stop dead in their tracks and pee all over. Okay, okay, no peeing required. But you know what I mean.

Without working with an expert who specializes in solving extreme dominance in dogs, this will not go away on its own. Some of these dogs even hold a grudge for something that happened a few minutes, a few hours or even a few days ago. This grudge may result in what appears to be an unprovoked attack or a nasty dog fight. And what's scary about this is it could happen when you least expect it. Some of these dogs snap at you, your loved ones and at your other pets whenever they please. Basically, the dog just “felt like it.”

In working with hundreds of red zone cases, I often found no logical or behavioral explanation for such outburst. They were just typical bullies who loved to dominate. Only a very small percentage of these dogs suffered from epilepsy, tumor in their brain, out of balance thyroid, chemical imbalance, early malnourishment or other types of medical problems.

In every one of these cases, I found no rules, no boundaries and certainly no effective leader in the household. You basically have a wacko dog that needs some serious help by a serious professional!

Drum Roll Please....

!!! I've Saved the Worst-of-the-Worst For Last !!!

Red Flag #10:

And when your dog finally bites, regardless of how much or how loud you scream trying to get your hand out of its jaw, not only he ignores you, but he even tugs backward, shaking your poor hand like a rag doll or keep biting you numerous times. This usually happens very fast leaving you with nasty lacerations and puncture wounds. These are the bites that usually require serious medical attention leaving you scars that last for years. Most of these scars will never go away.

This one is a no-brainer. Folks, if you own such a dog, you need professional help RIGHT NOW! It’s obvious that it has gone way beyond the “obedience factor.”

You need to hire a professional that actually deals and accepts aggressive cases on a regular basis. I am one of them, but thank God not the only one.

Unless you work with such expert, these signs are only the beginning of your problems. Dogs with these warning signs never get better on their own. In fact, they always get worse. I am talking about “the worst-of-the-worst” here.

Look at it this way. Would any of your bad habits go away on their own? Of course not! Psycho dogs are no different!

It took ten years of hard work, intense research, and studying thousands of cases
to write this book.

My Mission: To Find All the Reasons Why Dogs Didn't Thrive to Their Fullest Potential.

I was shocked to find that the "real cause" had very little to do with the dogs' age, breed,
size, intelligence, history, or even personality, but had everything to do with the
“human element.”

Dog owners and even dog trainers from all around the globe were skillfully misled, influenced and even brainwashed. Sadly, all this had a tremendous affect on their beliefs, attitude, technique, drive, sense of hope, creativity, and of course--their level of success.

Book's Description: This book takes a deeper look at modern dog training and canine psychology while it also introduces you to the next level and the future of training and canine behavior modification—“The Diverse Method.”

Think about it. If there are more than four hundred different breeds of dogs in this world, how can they possibly all respond to only one way of training? Have you ever considered that fact? You see, every dog was bred specifically for a purpose. So for any expert to argue that you can train EACH AND EVERY ONE with just Positive Reinforcement or Negative Reinforcement show their arrogance, lack of experience and diversity.

The secret is to follow a "Diverse Reinforcement" because, just as with humans, dogs don't always respond to a strictly positive or negative approach. Here's where it gets more interesting. All dog trainers know this, but don't or can't teach it in their training method.

!!! Now Did I Get Your Attention??? !!!

Look, you are definitely NOT going to be safe, smart or successful if you rely on just one way of training as a crutch. The key to greatness is to arm yourself with different training techniques that will prepare you for ANY dog, despite their age, size, strengths, intelligence, past history or personality. Again, I am talking about being "Diverse" because no method and no training tool is guaranteed to work in every situation and on every dog. That's just a fact!

This is one of those rare books that will make you smile, make you laugh, make you think and even challenge you to push yourself far beyond your leash or your bag of treats. It is filled with life lessons along with my incredible journey with dogs from all walks of life.

If you are the sensitive type, you may get a few lumps in your throat. I've spent a decade writing this book, which inspired me to learn something new from every dog, every owner and every trainer I've encountered. So, in a way, the book has grown with me.

My hope is that when you finish it, both you and your dog will be able to communicate with one another much more effectively.
