ARE YOU GUILTY OF MAKING THESE MISTAKES?
Hitting, yelling or pinning your dog on its back to make him listen or submit to you.
(Hint: You want your dog to respect you, NOT fear you.)
Relying heavily on the use of treats instead of your praise and technique. You'll notice that even treats won't work around other dogs, your visitors, or in front of your mail-carrier.
Giving and showing the treats before each command. You need to surprise your dog with treats once in a while and at the very “end” of your training session. Otherwise, you are not rewarding, you are actually “bribing” your dog. There is big difference.
Yelping or whimpering like a dog to stop your dog mouthing at you. (That is a sign of weakness and your dog will see you as a giant animated squeak toy.) No bite…simply means--NO BITE!
Staying away from telling your dog NO at all costs and instead sugarcoating it by changing it to funny terms like: Eh, Eh-eh or worse of them all, barking or growling at your dog to make your point. Hmm...who's the animal now?
Turning your back to a dog that is jumping on you or trying to body-slam you. (By doing so, all you are teaching your dog is to keep on humping your ass, to keep on jumping on your visitors, keep on knocking down the kids and to get your back all dirty and scratched up. Or, you are teaching your dog to not sniff your crotch but instead, shove his nose up your tush.)
Pretending that you have a treat with you by holding your fingers together tricking your poor dog to into obeying your commands. When you want to give your dog a treat, be truly genuine about it and don’t ever trick your poor dog. This stops working very fast. Just remember, we are not against giving treats, but rather against bribery.
Having a one "fits all" mentality with your training method. Just like us humans, positive reinforcement doesn't work on everybody and neither does negative reinforcement. You have to follow a "Diverse Reinforcement" and adjust according to how stubborn your dog is and of course based on his age, breed, prey drive, strengths, speed, as well as your own overall expectation and limitations.
