SECRET # 1:

A real expert in dogs, anything you throw at him/her, will adapt to your dog's personality. That is the first sign of a trainer who's experienced, versatile, and NOT prejudiced toward certain breeds of dogs and in fact love all dogs--regardless of their breed or mixture.

Not asking about about their specialty. Though teaching your dog to respond to your commands is just as important. Housetrain your dog, stop it from jumping up, nipping, growling, chasing cats, counter surfing, barking excessively, being hyper and solve dog fights in your household. We are one of the few in the industry who CAN get your dog completely off-leash trained, solve it's bad habits AND accept it even if it's considered to be an aggressive dog.

SECRET # 3:

Be especially careful if the trainer’s advising you NOT to feed your poor dog before the class. These trainers promise you that your dog will eventually respond to you just as good, even without the use of food forever and ever after. From experience we’ve noticed this is simply not true. In fact, THIS MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST DOG TRAINING SCAM EVER.

Sure some owners do get lucky with a dog that still responds when you wean it off the treats, but we are talking about one in every hundred dogs! Do you honestly want to gamble with this when the odds are so much against you? Your dog should Sit, Down or Stay because you said so and not because of a buiscuit.
 
Think About it... Would you still work for your company once they stopped paying you? Then why should your poor dog? You should be able to get your dog to mind you with or without any treats anywhere at any given time. Don't worry. I can show you how. That my dog-loving friend is what you call--Real World--dog training. I hope you see the logic here.

Dont' feel bad. I too have been misled by these cookie trainers for years and had to fianlly wake up and smell the coffee. Now I always end up RE-TRAINING these dogs that are brought to me on a regular basis. If you don't have a pouch of hotdogs and a starving dog around you 24/7, don't train your dog by food-reward based training. Or pay the consequence in the long run. Use positive reinforcement, through praise, affection and respect, but without giving your dog treats just for being alive. That is being smart AND practical.

Forgetting to ask about how confident they stand behind their credentials and training method. All trainers laughed at me when I first announced the guarantee in my courses. Everything is fast paced these days and nobody has any patience left. When you hire a pro, you will see results and see them FAST. So how do you REALLY know who is a professional and who trains dogs on the side? Simply ask them. But here's how to do it SMARTLY. Ask...

Do you train dogs full time or just as a hobby? If their response is: full time as a professinal. Then ask for their business license number. They must have this if they are a legitimate business. Just meeting in parks or their house isn’t good enough. You might be dealing with a Karaoke Dog Trainer. Arrange a meeting with the trainer face to face during the DAY. Since most people work daily, it will be hard to fool you with this one.

You see it’s very hard to be good enough, passionate enough AND serious enough to be able to train dogs SUCCESSFULY for a living. It's actually almost impossible since the odds are so much against you. I did it part time for ELEVEN years. Another clue is, look whether they are listed in the phone book, have a business card, whether they've written a book, or even have a website. It's odd NOT to have a decent web site these days. Wouldn't you agree? I know some that have five web sites. But that's just desperate and not being generous. There is enough dogs for all of us.
