Mistakes that Effective Trainers Never Ever Make !!!
Mistake #1:
Hitting, yelling, hanging or slamming your dog on its back to
make him listen or submit. (Hint: You want your dog to respect
you--NOT fear you.)
Mistake #2: Relying
heavily on the use of treats instead of your praise and technique.
I mean give the poor dog his food for God's sake. Nobody asks
you to do bunch of back flips or jump through hoops before feeding
you.
Hint: You'll be
far more effective if you give your dog treats at the very "end"
of your training sessions and NOT before each command. Treat or
not treat, your dog should Sit, Stay or Lie Down because you said
so and not because he sees a treat in your hand.
Mistake #3: Refusing
to say NO to your dog and instead, correcting it with funny terms
and noises like: Eh, Uh-Uh, or worse of all, barking or growling
at your dog to make your point. Hmm... who's the animal here now?
Mistake #4:
Turning your back to a dog that is jumping up and trying to body-slam
you. Folks, by doing so, all you are teaching your dog is to keep
humping your back, keep jumping on your guests, keep knocking
down the kids, and to get your back all dirty and scratched up.
(So in a way, you are encouraging your dog to NOT sniff your crotch,
but shove that wet and cold nose up your tush.)
Pet Smart, Petco and Clicker Trainers recommend these techniques.
As Dr. Phil would say, "How's that working out for you?"
That explains why 8 out of 10 of our clients have already tried
a pet store class and failed miserably.
Mistake #5:
Yelping or whimpering like a hurt puppy to stop your dog's play-biting
and mouthing at your hands and feet. That is mimicking a weaker
or a beta dog. Your dog would see you as some giant animated squeak
toy. No bite simply means--NO BITE every time!

and Prepare to Deal with:
Friends and relatives who hate dropping by because
they clearly see you have no control over your dog or
even worse, make ridiculous excuses for its unacceptable
behavior. Let's not forget all veterinarians and their
staff who can't or won't put up with your unruly dog.
A dog that only listens when you pull out a treat,
pretend you are holding a cookie or have to raise your
voice.
Constant arguments in your household and with your
neighbors due to your dog barking nonstop, running back
and forth and attacking the window or fence. Aren't
you proud that your dog can hear a pin drop from a mile
away?
Keep putting up with a disobedient dog that jumps
up constantly, play-bites at your hands and feet, steals
food off tables and goes crazy just because someone
rang the door bell or the mailman brought you some more
bills.
Adding more stress to your life because of your dog
not being fully housebroken or due to those inappropriate
markings. Not to mention a stinky house, a wrinkly nose,
and your carpet that probably needs replacing. All this
cost more than ANY dog training program out there.
A dog that sits but stays for only for a few seconds.
How about going bonkers in the car, pacing back and
forth, panting heavily and attacking the window as soon
as he spots or hears another dog? Don't forget changing
routes on walks the second you run into another dog.
God forbid your dog sees another person walking a dog.
And watch all hell breaks loose.
Suffering more embarrassment and looking clueless
when your dog flat out ignores you around your visitors,
or because your poor cat couldn't stay still for few
days. Maybe you want your dog to run for a while without
being leashed and that's when she takes her sweet time
coming back to you. I mean, how else is she going to
get rid of all that pent-up energy?
A dog that yanks your arm out of its socket on first
few blocks of your walks and doesn't care much about
knocking you or your kids down. How can we leave out
begging, whining, scratching at doors, and running around
like a maniac from room to room, crotch-to-crotch, butt
to butt, with no sense of boundaries or respect for
your home or your visitors. But then again, who cares
because he is soooooo cute. Yeah, tell that to your
guests.
Being completely ignored, especially once your doggie
finds himself off-leash and away from you. You notice
he forgets everything you taught him and goes deaf and
dumb, or you swear you’ve become invisible. Don't
believe me? Then unhook your dog's leash around other
dogs, cats, kids, squirrels, visitors and your neighbors.
A-ha! That’s what I thought. Newsflash: If your
dog was truly trained, you wouldn't have that doubt.
Being embarrassed that you have to chase after your
dog, running and screaming, every time he manages to
bolt out the door. Sometimes forget being on foot--get
the car, the roller blades or pull a Tony Hawk so you
can catch that dog.
A dog that is extremely overprotective, snaps and
lunges at other dogs, at people and, in worst case scenarios--even
at YOU and your loved ones. (Hint: There is nothing
wrong with your dog being protective, but NOT overprotective!)
The fear of never be able to fully trust your dog
around kids or toddlers.
Paying thousands of dollars in damages due to your
dog's destructive chewing, digging, destroying your
plants, the sprinkler system or your lovely furniture.
Forced to pay hefty vet bills because your dog attacks
other dogs for no reason, or worse, constantly bullies
and picks fights with your other family dog whenever
he feels like it.
Possible of being sued, which could cause you great
financial loss, risk of losing your home insurance,
and leave you with no choice but to find your dog another
owner.
Maybe even being forced to put your
poor dog down.

This Can't Be Why I Got Myself a Dog, Was it?
Isn't owning a dog supposed to be a fun, healthy, a loving
relationship, that you want to remember positively for
the rest of your life? So ultimately, it is your choice

a living.
Let me be very clear here: Your dog will NOT lose its
bad habits on its own or because it gets older.

with age? With some of us, yes, but even with us, getting
older doesn't always mean getting wiser or nicer. It's
no different when it comes to our dogs.
